FBI leading investigations into attacks in Michigan, Virginia

From NPR.

The FBI is leading two investigations into back-to-back terror attacks in Michigan and Virginia on Thursday.

In suburban Detroit, an attacker identified as Ayman Ghazali, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Lebanon, drove his truck into the Temple Israel synagogue. NPR has learned Ghazali had family members who were killed in an Israeli air strike last week in Lebanon, including his two brothers, a 7-year-old nephew and a 4-year-old niece. Ghazali’s parents and a sister-in-law were also injured in the strike. The FBI says Ghazali was found dead in the vehicle, and the agency is investigating the incident as a targeted attack on the Jewish community.

Separately, there was a deadly shooting at Norfolk, Virginia’s Old Dominion University. A former Army National guardsman opened fire in a classroom yesterday. Virginia’s governor identified the person killed in the attack as Lt. Col. Brandon Shah, the chair of Old Dominion’s military science department. Two other people were wounded. The FBI identified 36-year-old Mohamed Bailor Jalloh as the shooter. Officials say he was found dead at the scene. Jalloh pleaded guilty to attempting to provide material support to ISIS in 2016. In 2017, he was sentenced to 11 years in prison and released in 2024.

Experts tell NPR that despite the attacks occurring within hours of each other, there’s no reason for investigators to think they’re connected.
