50 children escape Nigerian abduction, but more remain captive

From Global News.

Fifty of the more than 300 children abducted from a Catholic school in north-central Nigeria have escaped captivity and are now with their families, the school authority said Sunday.

The schoolchildren, aged between 10 and 18, escaped individually between Friday and Saturday, school officials said. A total of 253 children and 12 teachers are still being held by the kidnappers.

The students were seized together with their teachers on Friday, by gunmen who attacked St. Mary’s School in Niger state’s remote Papiri community.
As Vincent McAviney reports, it is one of the worst mass abductions the country has ever seen.
