Carney’s leadership “needed more than ever,” Aga Khan says during 1st Canada visit

Marking his first visit to Canada, the 50th Ismaili Imam, Prince Rahim al-Hussaini – known formally as the Aga Khan – met with Prime Minister Mark Carney in Ottawa on Thursday.

Carney posed for photos with the leader of the Shia Nizari Ismaili Muslims while delivering a brief message on the importance of the “historic day” to reporters before the two engaged in a private conference.

The PM praised Canada’s120,000-strong Ismaili population for its cultural and economic contributions, while the Aga Khan commended Carney’s leadership amid tumultuous global affairs, claiming it is “needed more than ever.”

Additionally, Carney revealed David Lametti – the UN’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Canada – will be named as Canada’s official representative to the Ismaili Imam.
