From Global News.
There’s a verdict in a landmark trial about the addictiveness of social media. A jury in Los Angeles found that Meta – which owns Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp – as well as Google, intentionally built addictive social media platforms. The 20-year-old woman who sued them argued her mental health was harmed by constant scrolling. She has been awarded $3 million in damages. But this verdict, along with a second in New Mexico that found Meta endangers children, have much wider implications. As Touria Izri reports, these are unprecedented wins for those who have long argued tech companies know their platforms cause harm.
Canadian investigators are now on the ground at LaGuardia Airport in New York. The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) says three investigators are supporting their American counterparts, the NTSB, in determining what went wrong in the Sunday crash of an Air Canada flight that killed the two Canadian pilots. Mike Armstrong reports.
And, Prime Minister Mark Carney says he’s very disappointed Air Canada’s CEO chose to only speak English in a video statement he gave after the two Canadian pilots died in the fatal Sunday collision. Carney is not alone though. There is a growing backlash, especially in Quebec. The flight originated in Montreal, one of the dead pilots is from Quebec, and as Dan Spector reports, the CEO failing to at least say a few sentences in French, is being accused of showing a lack of respect.
Over in Iran, state broadcasters say Tehran has rejected Washington’s new 15-point peace plan aimed at ending the war started by the U.S. and Israel four weeks ago. Instead, Iran says it will end the war when it decides to – first demanding war damages and reparations. The stark difference between positions suggests the war appears to be nowhere near ending. Redmond Shannon reports.
