“Opportunity to heal”: Recognizing contributions made by Indigenous military members

From Global News.

This Remembrance Day has added significance for many Indigenous military members, veterans, and their families. The Canadian Armed Forces issued a formal apology for racial discrimination within the forces on Oct. 30th 2025, admitting they failed Indigenous service members.

First Nations veterans who served in World War I, World War II and in Korea, did not have the right to vote back home and did not receive the same benefits or recognition as their non-indigenous counterparts.

Col. George Mcleod from the Qalipu Mi’kmaq first Nation reflected on the sacrifices made by indigenous soldiers within the Canadian Armed Forces, who paved the way for him and “started a tremendous amount of advocacy work to fight for our rights.”
