Thousands of people from Africa attempt to reach Europe via the Mediterranean. The EU is disrupting these routes and outsourcing its border control responsibilities to countries in the Sahara and Sahel regions, in a bid to stem irregular migration. Billions of euros are being spent. Some of the money goes towards migration partnerships and programs with African countries, like Libya. But NGOs warn that funding is indirectly benefiting militia-linked networks and contributing to human rights abuses.
