The Catholic church says they have no religious objection to transplanting organs from animals to humans, as long as certain criteria are met.
The Vatican first greenlit these types of procedures in 2001, when many surgeries were in the early stages of development.
The statement issued on Tuesday continues to build on that initial framework and was done in consultation with doctors from Italy, the United States, and the Netherlands.
