Prime Minister Mark Carney is in Halifax on Thursday, where he is set to announce new measures to strengthen Canada’s armed forces.

The announcement comes after NATO released accounting estimates showing Carney’s government has finally met a key alliance commitment — spending two per cent of its GDP on defence in the last fiscal year.

Canada had come under pressure in recent years from within the alliance — especially from the U.S. — to dramatically ramp up its military spending.

The previous Liberal government under former prime minister Justin Trudeau did not have Canada reaching the target until 2032.
