President Donald Trump said on Thursday he used a mail-in ballot to vote in Florida because "I’m president," despite previously calling the voting method "cheating."
"I’m president of the United States, and because of the fact that I’m president of the United States, I did a mail-in ballot for elections that took place in Florida, because I felt I should be here," Trump told PBS News’ Liz Landers during a Cabinet meeting.
"I decided that I was going to vote by mail-in ballot because I couldn’t be there because I had a lot of different things," Trump added. "But, you know, we have exceptions for mail-in ballots."
Voting records show that Trump cast a mail-in ballot in Tuesday’s special election in Palm Beach County, Florida. The president was in Palm Beach, where he is registered to vote, between March 20 and March 22, when in-person early voting was available.
Trump has long criticized mail-in voting and is currently pushing for legislation that would overhaul elections, including by limiting who can cast mail ballots.
“Mail-in voting means mail-in cheating,” he said Monday during an event in Memphis. “I call it mail-in cheating, and we got to do something about it all.”
