From Global News.
NATO has confirmed that Canada has finally met its target of 2 per cent spending on defence – a commitment NATO allies made back in 2014.
Jaden Lee-Lincoln speaks with political science professor Christian Leuprecht on the significance of this fiscal achievement and what should come next for the country.
After what he described as the government dragging its feet for over a decade, Leuprecht – who lectures at the Royal Military College of Canada at Queen’s University – says Canada reaching this target should put us on the same level as most other NATO members.
What’s next? Well, Canada still needs to work towards its next target: a 5 per cent spend. Leuprecht said he’s “confident” the government can meet the 1.5 per cent intended for critical infrastructure investments, but that the other half might entail some “painful tradeoffs.”
