Speaking to reporters in Oslo on Saturday, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada doesn’t “have to have” oil reserves as a “reliable,” “low-risk” and “low-risk” net exporter.
This comes after Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson announced Friday Canada will up its production and contribute 23.6 million barrels of oil to help stabilize global markets amid the expanding war in the Middle East.
Crude oil and natural gas prices shot up after Iran essentially closed the Strait of Hormuz in response to joint U.S.-Israel military operations, which began two weeks ago.
