Officials say an explosion at a Jewish school in an affluent neighbourhood in Amsterdam was a “deliberate attack” on the Jewish community.

The explosion damaged a drainage pipe and charred an outer wall but caused no injuries, Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema said Saturday.

“It is an attempt to intimidate the Jewish community, to sow fear and terror, and that is an enormously cowardly act,” said Eddo Verdoner, Dutch national coordinator for combatting antisemitism.

A Jewish resident who said his five children attend the school expressed fear of being attacked, saying he doesn’t go out without a bulletproof vest.

Security at synagogues and Jewish institutions in the Dutch capital was already heightened after an overnight arson attack at a synagogue in Rotterdam on Friday.
