Following a four year process, the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California has purchased 10,274 acres of its ancestral homeland from the city of Santa Clara following a large and rare $5.5 million grant from California’s Wildlife Conservation Board. The land return marks a huge win for the Land Back movement, a global movement seeking the return of homelands to Indigenous people. Santa Clara initially purchased the property in 1977 from a ranching family for geothermal electricity generation, saying, "returning this land to the Washoe Tribe is both meaningful and historic."
