Jihad al-Shami, the man behind the deadly synagogue attack in Manchester, England, that claimed two lives and injured four others last week, was “influenced by extreme Islamist ideology,” Greater Manchester Police say.

“Al-Shami called 999 claiming responsibility for the attack, and he also pledged allegiance to Islamic State,” Assistant Chief Constable Rob Potts told reporters on Wednesday.

Last Thursday, the assailant – who was shot and killed on-scene by authorities – rammed a car into pedestrians outside Heaton Park Congregation Synagogue before continuing his attack with a knife.

Police assessments remain underway and the attack “remains a live counter-terrorism investigation,” Potts said.
