Putin defends India’s right to buy Russian oil amid increasing pressure from US“

From Global News.

Ahead of a two-day visit to India on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin defended India’s right to buy Russian oil, despite pressure from the U.S. for India not to.

There is increasing pressure on India from U.S. President Donald Trump to curb purchases of Russian oil amid Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Though the Republican leader has expressed a desire to mitigate funding for Moscow’s war effort, Putin argued that “the U.S. still buys nuclear fuel from us for its own nuclear power plants,” asking, “Why shouldn’t India have the same privilege?”

Putin’s state visit comes as Russian imports dip under the pressure of U.S. tariffs – which India has called unjustified, given Trump’s ongoing trade relations with Moscow.

“We hope that, in the end, all violations of World Trade Organization regulations will be rectified,” Putin told reporters from India Today, before leaving for New Delhi.
