Pros and Cons of Australia’s social media ban for under-16s | DW News

From DW News.

Australia is beginning to enforce the world’s first social media ban for teenagers. Companies who don’t comply face fines in the tens of millions of dollars.

Big platforms including TikTok and Instagram are now required to block access for those under 16 years of age. Tech companies have criticized the law. The new rules apply to ten big platforms, but some messaging apps like Whats App are not included.

Critics say the ban infringes on young people’s freedoms and some teens have filed legal challenges.
