In Gir National Park, a 1,900-square-kilometre expanse of savannah, acacia and teak forests in India’s Gujarat state, conservation efforts have pulled Asiatic lions back from the brink of extinction. From around 20 in the early 20th century, their numbers have bounced back to nearly 900 and have grown by a third over the past five years. "It’s a pride for us. It’s a pride for the government of Gujarat, for its department. Yes, we all are very happy", says conservationist Ramratan Nala.
