From Global News.
Belarusian authorities freed Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ales Bialiatski and key opposition figure Maria Kalesnikava, along with more than 100 other prisoners on Saturday.
The move comes as President Alexander Lukashenko seeks to improve relations with Washington.
The U.S. announced Saturday it was lifting sanctions on Belarus’s potash sector. In exchange, Lukashenko pardoned 123 prisoners.
For years, Belarus has been isolated by the West and has faced strict sanctions due to its human rights record and support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
