After weeks of protests across Iran, the supreme leader acknowledged thousands were killed during the demonstrations. But rather than blame Iran’s security forces, Ayatollah Khamenei accuses what he calls Iranian “seditionists” and even U.S. President Donald Trump of sparking the violence. Now, disturbing accounts are emerging from an Iranian who managed to escape. Redmond Shannon spoke with him for our top story tonight.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has arrived in the Persian Gulf state of Qatar, the day after concluding a deal with China on canola and electric vehicles. As Carney continues to pursue new trade deals in Qatar and next week at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, our chief political correspondent, David Akin reports that U.S. President Donald Trump has invited Carney to join his Board of Peace — the multinational institution charged with overseeing the reconstruction of Gaza — and Carney has accepted.

Ottawa unveiled the next steps in its national gun buyback program on Saturday. As of Monday, Canadians will have roughly two months to declare their interest in turning in outlawed firearms in order to receive compensation. Since 2020, the government has banned around 2500 assault-style firearms, saying they belong only on the battlefield and are not designed for hunting or sport. But some gun owners and provinces are already trying to kibosh the scheme, arguing the buybacks won’t make Canada safer at all. Dan Spector reports.

The resignation of Quebec Premier Francois Legault has not only generated reactions in that province but also in Newfoundland and Labrador. Legault was one of the driving forces behind negotiations with the province to craft a new hydroelectric deal. Heidi Petracek explains why Legault’s exit is raising questions about the fate of that agreement.
