Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro calls it “cruel.” The Department of Homeland Security said Thursday that “ICE did NOT target a child. The child was ABANDONED.”

DHS says the boy’s father was an undocumented immigrant from Ecuador who fled on foot and ICE officers remained with the child until the man was apprehended.

Democratic Gov. Shapiro is seeking a second term to lead the commonwealth. But as his vetting for vice president during Kamala Harris’ run made clear, he’s on the national radar, too, and could make his own play for the White House.

Shapiro addressed his current and future aspirations, and the role his faith plays in everything he does in an interview Thursday outside Philadelphia, linked to his forthcoming memoir, Where We Keep the Light.
