Global National: Feb. 7, 2026 | China’s top court orders new trial for Canadian sentenced to death

From Global News.

There have been dramatic developments in the case of Robert Schellenberg, a Canadian national detained in China on drug smuggling charges for more than a decade. China’s top court has struck down Schellenberg’s death sentence and ordered a new trial, signalling a diplomatic thaw between Beijing and Ottawa after years of strained relations. This follows Prime Minister Mark Carney’s high-stakes trip to China last month, one that focused on resetting ties in the face of U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff pressures. Nathaniel Dove reports.

It has now been one week since Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of ‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie, went missing from her home, and there are still more questions than answers about her disappearance. Authorities say they’re looking into whether a new message they received is real. U.S. President Donald Trump stated Friday, "We have some clues that I think are very strong.” Candice Cole has the latest.

Canada has captured some early glory at the Winter Olympic Games in Milano-Cortina with Quebec’s Valerie Maltais earning Canada’s first medal at the games with a bronze in the women’s 3000-metre speed skating competition. Meanwhile, Team Canada’s women’s hockey got their first win, defeating Switzerland 4-0. Mike Armstrong has the latest from the games.

Federal public servants will be expected to spend more time in the office. Unions are pushing back against this latest order, one that comes as Ottawa looks to cut thousands of jobs. And those public servants who rallied behind Prime Minister Mark Carney during the election might be second-guessing their decision. As Jillian Piper reports, for many, it feels like a betrayal.
