Japan’s Takaichi wins landslide election as first female PM

From Global News.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s coalition secured a majority on Sunday, winning more than half of parliamentary seats in a snap election.

Takaichi became prime minister in October following her election as leader of the Liberal Democratic Party. Her popularity among youth has been dubbed "sanakatsu," which translates roughly as "Sanae-mania."

Since taking office, she has accelerated military spending to counter China, pushed for a sales-tax cut and courted Donald Trump, who has publicly endorsed her.

Sanae is the first female prime minister in Japan’s history.
