From Global News.
Ukrainian skeleton athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych trained on Monday at the Milano Cortina Games donning a helmet that featured images of compatriots killed during Russia’s war in Ukraine – delivering on a promise to use the Olympics to keep attention on the conflict.
“I feel that I [am] fulfill[ing] someone’s dreams, and these people don’t deserve to die so young,” he told Reuters on Monday.
Since Heraskevych, 26, spoke to Reuters he has posted a video on social media in which he claims that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has banned him from wearing the helmet at the Milano Cortina Games.
Initially, Heraskevych said he intended to respect Olympic rules prohibiting political demonstrations at venues while still ensuring Ukraine’s plight remained visible during the Games, but speaking Tuesday, he said, “I used it today. I will use it tomorrow and I will use it on a race day.”
Rule 50.2 of the Olympic Charter states: "No kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda is permitted in any Olympic sites, venues or other areas."
