Pro-Palestine protesters clashed with Sydney Police Monday over Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s visit. Herzog is in the country to show solidarity with Australia’s Jewish community following last December’s deadly mass shooting at Bondi Beach.
The controversial visit was condemned by activists and some Australian politicians, who accuse Herzog of being complicit in the civilian deaths in Gaza. Some MPs participated in the protests, even documenting their interactions with Police.
“I got lifted off the ground and then you can see in the video, as I’m trying to regain my balance, another police officer punches me in the head and then I get another one after that, that punches me in the shoulder,” member of the New South Wales Legislative Council Abigail Boyd said adding, “I don’t understand how that is a proportionate response.”
New South Wales state Premier Chris Minns defended police conduct, suggesting officers had to make quick decisions in volatile environment and urged people to “not judge the actions of police on 10 second or 15 second social media clips.”
