WATCH: Rep. Cohen questions Attorney General Pam Bondi on ICE recruitment

From PBS NewsHour.

Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., questioned Attorney General Pam Bondi in an oversight hearing Wednesday.

He pointed to ads in his home state of Tennessee that seemed to encourage local law enforcement to become agents with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

"We need people working in the front lines of local law enforcement to protect our citizens from the worst of the worst. The worst of the worst are not the immigrants," Cohen said.

"I have not yet seen that commercial, that ad," Bondi replied. "I would argue that we need strong people in both local law enforcement, state law enforcement, and all of our federal agencies working together."

The hearing offered an opportunity for lawmakers to question Bondi on a number of controversial issues involving the Justice Department, including around the Trump administration’s failure to meet a Congress-mandated deadline to release all of its Epstein files; the legal justification for the administration’s capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and strikes on alleged drug boats in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific; as well as prosecutions of perceived Trump political rivals like James Comey and Letitia James. Bondi is seeking to revive both cases, which were already thrown out by a U.S. district judge.
