Thousands of Iranians marched through the streets of Tehran Wednesday, marking the 47th anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The commemorations follow a violent crackdown on anti-government protesters in January that resulted in not only a temporary internet blackout, but the reported killing of thousands of demonstrators.
Though he held off on military intervention during last month’s unrest, Donald Trump threatened to act if the violence escalated. And on Tuesday, the U.S. President suggested he may deploy a second aircraft carrier to the region if the Iranian regime does not agree to a nuclear deal.
U.S. and Iranian officials met for indirect nuclear negotiations in Oman on Friday and while no concrete commitments were made, follow-up conversations are expected to occur.
Among Israel and other European nations, the U.S. has accused Tehran of seeking nuclear weapons, while Iran says its nuclear programme is solely for peaceful energy purposes.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed frustration with the “high wall of mistrust” shown by the U.S. and Europe, adding that “Iran will not bow to their excessive demands” – a sentiment protesters in Tehran echoed Wednesday.
