From Global News.
The death toll from Cyclone Gezani in Madagascar has risen to 20, according to the country’s disaster management office, as the Indian Ocean island nation grapples with the storm’s devastating impact.
Gezani tore across the east coast with sustained winds of around 185 kilometres per hour, and gusts nearing 270. Homes collapsed under intense pressure from the winds. Roofs were blown off, walls crumbled, and entire neighbourhoods were plunged into darkness as power lines snapped.
By Wednesday morning, Madagascar’s meteorological service reported that Gezani had weakened to a moderate tropical storm. It had moved inland, tracking westward about 100 kilometres north of the capital, Antananarivo.
