Tumbler Ridge mass shooting: BC throne speech cancelled, replaced with heartfelt tribute

From Global News.

Thursday was declared a day of mourning in British Columbia following the devastating mass shooting that left eight dead in the quaint, northeast community of Tumbler Ridge two days prior.

Rather than delivering a typical throne speech to mark the first provincial legislative session in Victoria, Thursday’s gathering opened with a heartfelt tribute dedicated to the families and friends of those lost in the massacre.

British Columbia Lt.-Gov. Wendy Cocchia offered sympathies and prayers to the “tight-knit community suffering unimaginable pain.”

“As a mother, it is absolutely impossible to comprehend the pain and the sorrow that people are experiencing,” Cocchia said. “Nobody thinks for a moment that you will send your child or your loved one off in the morning, and that they will not return. My heart aches for everyone in this situation,” she added.

Premier David Eby said his government will put forward the provincial budget when they are “able to,” noting that their priority at present was to support the families in Tumbler Ridge.
