“He acted in self-defence”: Jury clears Ontario store clerk of assault on robber

From Global News.

A Superior Court jury has found 24-year-old Tejeshwar Kalia not guilty of aggravated assault following a violent robbery at a downtown Peterborough Circle K in January 2024.

Jurors viewed surveillance video showing a masked man armed with a bat and knife confronting the clerk before a struggle spilled outside the store.

The case centred on whether Kalia exceeded self-defence after striking the robber, who later pleaded guilty to robbery with violence.

Kalia, who suffered a concussion during the incident, said he is now focused on rebuilding his life after the ordeal cost him his savings in legal fees.
