Ice hockey, throughout its history, has been a predominantly white sport. That’s changing.
Laila Edwards became the first Black woman to play for the U.S. Olympic ice hockey team when she took to the ice at the 2026 Winter Games. But as Edwards pursues gold in Italy, grassroots efforts back in the U.S. are working to make sure this historic moment isn’t the last.
Addison Briley spoke to Renee Hess, the founder of the non-profit Black Girls Hockey Club, about the importance of working to bridge hockey’s racial gap.
