Arizona Democrat Adelita Grijalva sworn into Congress

From PBS NewsHour.

U.S. Rep. Adelita Grijalva, D-Ariz., was sworn in officially to the House of Representatives on Wednesday by Speaker Mike Johnson, more than seven weeks after voters elected her to the seat.

Grijalva won a special election in late September to succeed her father, Rep. Raúl Grijalva, who died earlier this year at age 77. She is the first Latina to represent Arizona in the U.S. House. Her congressional district includes the city of Tucson and almost all of Arizona’s border with Mexico.

Johnson previously said he would not officially seat Grijalva in the House until the chamber reconvened following a deal to end the ongoing government shutdown. The delay attracted questions and attention from lawmakers, reporters and the public.

After her swearing-in, Grijalva added the last needed signature on a petition to force a House vote on a bill requiring the Department of Justice to release all unclassified documents and communications in the Jeffrey Epstein case.
