“As if I was born again”: Joy as Israel, Hamas agree to “first phase” of Gaza ceasefire

From Global News.

Israel and Hamas have agreed to a pause in the devastating two-year war and an exchange of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners.

The breakthrough was greeted with joy and relief across the Gaza Strip and Israel on Thursday, though uncertainty remains about some aspects of the broader ceasefire deal put forward by U.S. President Donald Trump – including Hamas disarmament and who will govern Gaza.

“I am super happy for the first time in my life. I am 40 years old, and today I am happy. It’s as if I was born again,” said Ahmad al-Haddad, a displaced Palestinian who fled to Deir al-Balah with his wife and family of six.

“There’s no better joy in a holiday than to hear that our brothers are going to come back home,” said Eyal Ohrenstein, who had joined others near Jerusalem’s Old City walls for Sukkot holiday prayers when spontaneous celebrations broke out.

Israelis also gathered at Hostage Square in Tel Aviv to mark the occasion.
