The United Nations held an emergency meeting days after the United States conducted an early morning strike in Venezuela that resulted in the arrest and capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
US ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz defended the attack, likening it to capture of Panama’s Manuel Noriega in 1990. The Panamanian leader faced charges of drug trafficking, racketeering, and money laundering and was later sentenced to prison in the US.
Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores also face federal charges of narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine importation conspiracy and illegal weapons count.
