Alongside state and federal police commissioners, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says Sunday’s antisemitic mass shooting may have been inspired by the terrorist organization ISIS.

After finding two homemade Islamic State flags – and IEDs – in one of the shooter’s vehicles, authorities came to that determination, noting that they “continue to work through the motive of this tragedy.”

Though Albanese has promised to propose stricter gun control measures, the death of 15 people and injury of dozens at the fatal Hannukah celebration over the weekend has prompted mass demands from Australians for quick action.

In the interim, Albanese says his government has passed legislation to “outlaw hate speech” as a response to ongoing antisemitism.

New South Wales Police declared the attack a “terrorist incident” and confirmed authorities had fatally shot one of the gunmen. The other suspect was arrested. The assailants were father and son.
