A U.S. Border Patrol agent shot a man in Arizona near the Mexico border on Tuesday leaving him in critical condition.

The suspect, Patrick Gary Schlegal, “has a significant criminal history to include an active federal arrest warrant issued in 2025 by the U.S. Marshals Service for escape related to a previous federal alien smuggling conviction,” according to FBI special agent in charge Heith Janke.

A shootout occurred after agents recognized Schlegal’s vehicle and made a traffic stop, to which Schlegal proceeded to flee on foot and allegedly used a firearm to shoot at a manned CBP helicopter, to which agents returned fire, officials said.

This incident occurred amid heightened tensions in the United States after federal immigration agents in Minnesota shot and killed two U.S. citizens in recent weeks as part of the Trump administration’s immigration-enforcement crackdown.
