Substantial funding cuts and veto politics within the UN have led to a deep crisis for the world’s largest international intergovernmental body. But the UN is still irreplaceable, says María Fernanda Espinosa, one of the potential candidates for UN Secretary-General, who could become the first woman at the helm of the organization. The former Foreign Minister and Defense Minister of Ecuador spoke to DW’s Nina Haase at the 2026 Munich Security Conference, saying emerging powers from the Global South must shape the next era of global governance, and she laid out her reasons to remain optimistic about human agency and political will despite over 60 active conflicts worldwide.
