“Chile won, hope won”: Chileans elects conservative Jose Antonio Kast as president

From Global News.

On Sunday, Jose Antonio Kast won the Chilean presidential election with 58 per cent of the vote in a runoff against incumbent-backed Jeannette Jara. Kast ran a campaign on migrant deportations, deploying the military to deal with crime, and building border walls.

In his victory speech, Kast proclaimed, “it’s not one person who won, it’s not a party that won; here Chile won, Chile won, hope won, the hope of living without fear — that fear that torments families. The Chile that works won, the Chile that gets up early.”

Kast’s electoral victory continues a political trend in Latin America, with Ecuador’s Daniel Noboa, El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele and Argentina’s Javier Milei, right-wing movements are successfully seizing power across South America.
