Colombian military “must defend” sovereignty against potential US invasion, minister says

From Global News.

Colombia’s foreign minister on Tuesday said the country’s military must defend the country’s territory and sovereignty in the event of a hypothetical U.S. invasion.

“If such aggression were to occur, the military must defend the national territory and the country’s sovereignty,” Foreign Minister Rosa Villavicencio said at a press conference, adding that, under international law, states have the right to legitimate self-defence.

This comes after U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday said the Colombian government was “run by a sick man,” an apparent reference to President Gustavo Petro, and claimed the country was involved in cocaine production and trafficking into the United States.

In response, Colombia’s Interior Minister Armando Benedetti said, "We will continue coordinating and cooperating in the fight against drug trafficking."
