Less than a year after making the claim, Prime Minister Mark Carney was asked Friday if he still believes China to be Canada’s “biggest security threat.”
The question comes as the Liberal leader announced a “new era” in Canada-China relations, following a two-day visit to Beijing – which included new pacts with President Xi Jinping.
Though he said we are in an era “more dangerous and divided,” Carney said that those threats are managed through alliances and engagement – something he noted Canada was “pursuing” with China.
Furthermore, Carney said the new agreements made with China includes “greater cooperation between law enforcement on a series of cross-border crime issues,” adding that he also discussed foreign interference concerns with Xi.
