EU Energy Commissioner: More important than ever for Europe to stick together | DW News

From DW News.

The EU Commissioner for Energy and Housing, Dan Jørgensen, spoke to DW’s Michaela Küfner at the International North Sea Summit hosted by the German government in Hamburg, where European political leaders and industry representatives pledged to expand investment into offshore wind energy capacity in the North Sea region. Among other declarations, the summit produced a joint offshore wind investment pact. Jørgensen called the results of the meeting “a very clear signal to the market that if you want to invest in offshore wind, then Europe is the place to do it.”

Cooperation among Europeans was key in making the continent more energy-independent, the Danish Social Democrat said: “It’s more important than ever that we stick together and work together in Europe and there’s no security without energy security. […] It’s never good for Europe to be dependent on anybody.” Jørgensen said that Europe was committed to transforming its energy sector further toward renewable technologies and becoming more self-reliant in its energy production. Decoupling from Russia was one of the EU’s key goals, the Danish Social Democrat emphasized, and said that the EU has agreed to cease importing Russian energy going forward. Jørgensen also spoke about the transatlantic relationship and the recent dispute between the US administration and Denmark on the Danish territory of Greenland and Europe’s position on the matter.
