On Dec. 12, 2000, the Supreme Court issued its landmark Bush v. Gore decision, settling a presidential election dispute between then-candidate George W. Bush and Vice President Al Gore over a ballot recount in Florida. In a 5–4 vote, the high court ordered the end of the recount, thereby allowing Bush to keep the Sunshine State’s 25 electoral votes and propelling him to the White House.
