Asked if he was concerned about U.S. President Donald Trump wanting to annex Canada in the future, Ontario Premier Doug Ford told reporters that idea “shouldn’t frighten anyone in Canada.”

The question came two days after Trump ordered a military strike on Venezuela and captured President Nicolas Maduro. Since then, Trump has claimed his administration would “run” Venezuela for the time being – and even expressed interest in Greenland’s critical minerals.

"If there was one thing President Trump has done good for Canada… [it’s that] he woke us up,” Ford said during his first press conference of 2026, indirectly referring to Trump-implemented tariffs against Canada. “There are no rules with President Trump.”

Outside of trade tensions with Canada’s southern neighbour, Ford expressed positivity over what’s ahead for Ontario and Canada in the new year, while admitting there may be some “bumps” in the road.
