Torrential rain and flooding have killed 800 people on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. President Subianto is facing growing criticism for delaying a disaster declaration that would unlock vital funds for relief efforts. Survivors of catastrophic flooding on the Indonesian island of Sumatra are struggling to receive aid as many roads are destroyed or remain blocked by water and debris. Shortages of food, fuel, and clean water have become widespread in the aftermath of back-to-back cyclones that tore across Southeast Asia. Long lines have formed at gas stations, and reports of looting have been made. Climate experts have warned yet again that warming temperatures fuel heavier rainfall, as pressure mounts on Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto’s government to declare a state of emergency.
