Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for "promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy," announced Jørgen Watne Frøydnes, Chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
“Oh my God. My God. Well, I have no words," reacted Machado when the Nobel Peace Prize the institute’s Secretary called Machado to break the news to her.
Venezuelans reacted with joy and hope to opposition leader Machado receiving the Nobel Prize.
Machado, a 58-year industrial engineer who lives in hiding, was blocked in 2024 by Venezuela’s courts from running for president and thus challenge President Nicolas Maduro who has been in power since 2013.
