“I’ll be staying out the water”: Australian locals avoid water after 4 shark attacks in 2 days

From Global News.

Beaches in Sydney and dozens more along Australia’s east coast were closed on Tuesday after four people were attacked by sharks in separate incidents within the past two days. In the wake of back-to-back incidents, beach authorities advised locals to stay away from the shore.

Cartilaginous fish biologist Victoria Camilieri-Asch suggests the increased shark presence is due to a multitude of factors, including heavy rain that washed sewage runoff which attracts bait fish and in turn predators, such as bull sharks.

The beach closures come at the height of summer in the Southern Hemisphere, a time when beaches across Australia are typically busy with locals and visitors.
