A day after news that Japan will soon lose the last two giant pandas that it hosts, thousands of desperate fans flocked to Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo on December 16 to catch a final glimpse, many bidding the beloved twins a tearful farewell.
 
While the pair’s return to China had long been planned, Japan’s loss of the pandas is rich in symbolism as bilateral relations have sunk to the worst levels in years.
