Japan PM Takaichi dissolves parliament for snap election

From Global News.

Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi dissolved the lower house of parliament on Friday, paving the way for a national election on Feb. 8 as she seeks to capitalize on her strong public approval ratings.

The snap vote will decide all 465 seats in parliament’s lower house and mark Takaichi’s first electoral test since becoming Japan’s first female premier in October.

On Monday she vowed to suspend an eight per cent food levy for two years, echoing proposals by her rivals despite the potential strain on the country’s already precarious finances.

Official election campaigning will begin on Jan. 27. If the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and the Japan Innovation Party secure a majority, Takaichi will be confirmed as prime minister in a special parliamentary session.
