How can you tell if an image you’re seeing online matches its description? One good way to begin looking into where a picture or video comes from is to conduct a reverse image search, where you feed an image into a search engine rather than words. Combing through the results takes some time and focus, but sometimes it will lead you to the original author – and you may be surprised at its origin.
In this video, New Delhi-based Devesh Mishra describes how he used reverse image search when a striking video appeared online of people climbing and shaking the gates of what appeared to be a shrine. The posts were shared with claims they showed anti-Hindu acts of vandalism in Nepal during September 2025 protests, but he found the original footage showed an annual religious festival months earlier.
