“People are afraid”: Clashes erupt in Illinois as protesters face police officers at ICE facility

From Global News.

Protesters gathered outside an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Broadview, Illinois, on Friday, clashing with police and chanting slogans such as "Shut it down" and "Immigrants are welcome here" in opposition to immigration policies.

Police armed with batons pushed back demonstrators attempting to block the facility’s entrance, arresting several. Activists ignored warnings to stay off the roadway, with some donning tear gas masks and raising fists in defiance.

"People are suffering. People are afraid," said protester Lee Goodman, voicing frustration with government policies. Activist Jax West described using her privilege to confront law enforcement, saying, "White privilege means my life is not made harder by the colour of my skin."

Some 500 National Guard troops began deploying near Chicago on Wednesday at the direction of U.S. President Donald Trump.
