From Global News.
Peru’s lawmakers swore in Congress chief José Jeri as the country’s new president on Friday, just an hour after unanimously voting to remove President Dina Boluarte.
Jeri, who is now Peru’s seventh president since 2016, addressed Congress wearing a sash adorned with the national flag. He stated, "The main enemy is out there on the streets: criminal gangs," and added, "We must declare war on crime."
Residents of Lima expressed distrust toward the newly appointed president.
One resident said, "The successor shouldn’t have dirty hands; he should be completely clean and shouldn’t have issues with the police or things from the past. Didn’t they—lawmakers or whoever appointed him—think about who they were choosing?"
